Skills and Specialities
I engage learners through a holistic view of students and education. Below are the practical tenants that inform this approach within my three content specialities, all of which is evinced by student work samples.
21st Century Learning
While teaching with tomorrow in mind, I strengthen students' soft skills, such as collaboration and communication, alongside the acquisition of hard skills such as mechanics and coding. In this project, we used a central question - "What is it like to be a Pixar story creator?" - to combine physical and digital forms of media to create meaningful stories.
Digital Literacy
I guide students in a manner that fosters their awareness of how to navigate digital print and media. My students walk away from the school year better equipped to navigate the online world, technology, and are able to discern quality sources of information. In this example, students have researched and selected quality sources of information in order to analyze a challenging topic: coral destruction.
Global Citizenship
My students develop a perspective for and responsibility towards the world that considers the immediate impact of large scale issues, such as aging population, food scarcity, and coral reef destruction. Every Spring, we conduct research and present findings on issues that face us and the rest of the world. The larger context of the project encourages students to find ways to face and navigate these challenges within their own communities.
